Cons: How to Read an Oral Poem is an incredibly dense tome of nonsense.
Dr. Fine is a great teacher. I loved the oral traditions we looked at in the course and hated the mode we used to analyze them.
Cons: She must think you have no other classes if she expects you to read 30 pages before every class.
Cons: TONS OF READING. Like a ridiculous amount.
Extremely biased
service learning hours
I will not be taking a class with Dr. Fine ever again. I think at one point she was a good teacher, but that is no longer. She has good intentions, but it doesn't work. We read 3 different chapter books at once, resulting in almost 100+ pages of reading a night that you must respond on. Service learning hours are a big part of your grade, and you must get 15 hours plus write reflections. She is extremely biased and only shows one side of the picture. At times you really wonder how on earth she has a degree in the subject. DO NOT TAKE.
Cons: Finals are written take home essay types. (Pro or Con if you like that kind of thing)
Take this class! Its awesome!
Cons: A bit spacey.
She's one of the best professors I've ever had at VT. Learned much more than I ever would of anticipated. She made me remember why I came to college in the first place. The service learning was an excellent experience, along with the field trip to Kayford Mtn. which allowed students to participate in Appalachian communities first hand.
Cons: Too much homework - it's like she thinks her class is the only one we have!
Dr. Fine is a good professor who is knowledgeable about what she teaches. She wants everyone to do well in her class so her exams and quizzes are pretty easy, as long as you read the material that was assigned in class. There are also many opportunities to earn extra credit (going to lectures, movies etc...). The homework she assigns is not difficult, but more in the fact that she assigns so much. There are two books assigned to the class, but we didn't use them as much as I thought, but instead had to print out so many readings. The readings for homework were between 15-50 pages - not only is that a lot of ink being wasted, but some that were assigned weren't even discussed in class. Overall, however, Dr. Fine is a good professor and her class is very interesting.
Cons: test was def harder than it should have been; paper at the end is just annoying; you have to complete 15 hours of service credits.
Cons: it's torture going to class. attendance is taken. she calls on random people because no one wants to answer elementary questions
She knows absolutely nothing about Native culture. DON NOT TAKE THIS FOR THE AINS MINOR (or in general). She is the head of the Humanities Department (I have no idea how) and got her PhD in folklore. She always tries to perform and you gives several 'performance' grades.
Cons: As I recall, only a couple exams...a mid-term and and final...but they are not your regular exams...they are essays you write on your own over the length of the semester
Cons: must present multiple "family settings"
seems like an acting/theater class
grades easily on oral presentations
Cons: nothing
